Bucks suffer 6-1 setback in Salmon Arm

A swing and a miss for the Cranbrook Bucks Saturday night in Salmon Arm.

The Silverbacks struck early in the first period, after killing a Bucks power play following a warmup violation. A goal from Maddux Martin at 2:25 got things started for Salmon Arm. Cranbrook briefly had the game tied 1-1 thanks to a Julian Frias marker at 6:35, but another Silverbacks goal from Jacob Bonkoski less than two-minutes later restored Salmon Arm’s one-goal lead. Cranbrook trailed 2-1 at the first intermission.

The Bucks showed a little bit more pushback in the middle frame, outshooting the home team 10-9. However, Salmon Arm managed the long goal in the second period from Riley Ashe at 15:54. It was a 3-1 for Salmon Arm after forty minutes.

The game slipped out of Cranbrook’s reach in the early goings of the third period. Salmon Arm extended their lead to 5-1 with goals from Ryan Gillespie and Reid Varkonyi just thirty-nine seconds apart. The Silverbacks added one more late goal to secure an impressive 6-1 victory over the Bucks.

Saturday’s loss sees Cranbrook’s record dip to 2-2. Salmon Arm outshot the Bucks 33-27, Cranbrook finished 0/2 on the power play and 3/4 on the penalty kill.

Cranbrook finally gets back to home ice Friday, October 6, for their home opener versus the Merritt Centennials.
