PHOTO: Jack Murray

The Cranbrook Bucks (2-10-0-1) and the Trail Smoke Eaters (6-6-0-0) needed extra time on Sunday afternoon, with the Smoke Eaters winning in a shootout by a score of 4-3.

Cranbrook’s Nikolas Sombrowski scored his third consecutive goal for the Bucks late in the 1st period to give the Bucks a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Trail evened up the score thanks to a goal from Brady Hunter at the 6:25 mark of the 2nd period. Cranbrook’s Nathan Fox answered just 9 seconds later to restore the Bucks lead before Cameron Kungle would tally the insurance goal with a slapshot from the point. Coalson Wolford converted on the powerplay to get the Smoke Eaters within 1 before Carson Golder scored late in the frame to send the Bucks and the Smoke Eaters into the second intermission tied 3-3. The 3rd period saw no scoring and extra time was needed. Cranbrook and Trail exchanged scoring chances in the extra frame but neither could find the back of the net. All 4 shooters in the first 2 rounds of the shootout were able to beat Airey and Hamming. Coalson Wolford beat Nathan Airey in the 3rd round before Cam Reid missed the net, giving the Smoke Eaters their 6th win of the season. Cranbrook’s Nathan Airey stopped 36/39 shots while Trail’s Cayden Hamming stopped 32/35 shots.
