Cranbrook opens Western Financial Place with first win of 2026-27, turning aside the Okotoks Oilers in front of 1,456 fans.
The Cranbrook Bucks opened the home portion of the 2026-27 BCHL schedule in winning fashion Friday night, defeating the Okotoks Oilers 4-2 at Western Financial Place. Ty Ross scored twice, Keegan Carswell stopped 31 shots, and Gryphon Watson-Bucci buried the game-winner as the Bucks earned their first victory of the season in front of 1,456 fans.
Coming home 0-2-0 after road losses in Salmon Arm and West Kelowna, Cranbrook answered early, weathered an Okotoks push through the middle of the game, and closed it out with a dominant third period. The Bucks outshot the Oilers 43-33, including a 19-4 margin in the final frame.
Scoring Summary
1st Period — Ross opened the home season at 4:43, finishing a feed from Luc Trevors and Matthew Gilmore to make it 1-0. Okotoks answered on the power play at 15:29 when Will Watson converted from Eli Molde and Jamie Hikida after Cole Willard was called for interference. The period ended 1-1.
2nd Period — Willard atoned for the earlier penalty at 11:19, scoring his first of the season off a Gilmore pass to restore the lead. Matthew Hikida tied it again for Okotoks at 14:30 from Molde and Jeff Niehaus. With 2:20 left in the period, Watson-Bucci snapped a rebound past Justin Giguere from Mitch Patrick and Cadel Gourlay for the game-winning goal and a 3-2 Cranbrook lead after 40 minutes.
3rd Period — Fourteen seconds into the third, Hikida was assessed a goaltender interference minor. Cranbrook needed just 1:45 of the man advantage for Ross to score his second of the night — and third of the season — from Lucas Husted-Edwards and Trevors at 1:59. The Oilers managed only four shots the rest of the way as Carswell and the Bucks defence locked it down.
Goaltending
Carswell went the distance for the win, turning aside 31 of 33 shots. Giguere took the loss for Okotoks after making 39 saves on 43 shots. Carswell was named the game’s second star.
