Silverbacks Stall Bucks Winning Streak

The Salmon Arm Silverbacks are known to boast one of the more stingy defenses in the BCHL, and the Cranbrook Bucks found out first hand in a 2-1 road loss Saturday night at Shuswap Lake.

The Silverbacks opened the scoring late in the first period. A power play goal from Cole Cooksey with a little over a minute left in the opening frame put the home team up 1-0 at intermission.

Salmon Arm was able to extend their lead in the second period. A goal from Roenick Jodoin at the halfway mark at the stanza lifted the Silverbacks lead to 2-0. The Bucks failed to gain any ground ahead of second intermission.

Cranbrook’s shooters were held at bay through most of the third period. However, the Bucks were able to break Salmon Arm’s shutout bid with a last-minute goal from Rasmus Svartstrom, his 35th goal of the season to set a new record for the Kootenay club. Despite the late goal, the Bucks ran out of time and fell 2-1 to Salmon Arm.

Saturday’s loss drops Cranbrook’s record to 24-16-2, Salmon Arm outshot the Bucks 34-23. On special teams, Cranbrook’s power play finished 0/5 and they went 3/4 on the penalty kill.

The Bucks are back in action Wednesday night in Trail.
