The Cranbrook Bucks saw their three game winning streak fall to the red-hot Trail Smoke Eaters in a 6-3 loss Friday night.
A first period flurry from Trail set the tone early in the game. Goals from Zach Coutu, Jason Stefanek and Judah Makway just 1:24 apart lifted the Smokies to a 3-0 lead just past the six minute mark. Cranbrook cut the lead to two with a tally from Rasmus Svartstrom to make it a 3-1 game at intermission.
An early second period goal from Cranbrook captain Bryce Soorko gave the Bucks hope as the Trail lead dwindled to 3-2 just twenty-two seconds into the middle frame. Trail erased their early mistake with a response from Cade de St. Hubert to go up 4-2. A second goal from Svartstrom returned the Bucks to within striking distance with the score at 4-3 after forty minutes.
The Smokies held strong through the third period, and added a pair of goals to secure a 6-3 victory and move their winning streak to ten games.
Friday’s loss drops Cranbrook’s record to 20-14-2, they outshot Trail 46-27. On special teams, the Bucks went 2/6 on the power play and 3/4 on the penalty kill.
The Bucks are back in action at home Sunday afternoon versus the Cowichan Valley Capitals.
