The Cranbrook Bucks are no longer strangers to overtime after going the distance versus the West Kelowna Warriors Wednesday, taking a 3-2 loss in the extra frame.
The Bucks outshot West Kelowna 15-5 in the first period, but it was the Warriors who opened the scoring. A Luciano Bruno goal just after the halfway mark put the Warriors at a 1-0 lead ahead of intermission.
Cranbrook’s hottest player put his team on the board in the middle frame. A power play goal from Rasmus Svartstrom pulled the Bucks into a 1-1 tie to set up a nail-biter of a third period.
In the final frame, Bucks forward Kaslo Fernie tallied in the opening minute to give Cranbrook a 2-1 lead, but it would not last. The Warriors were able to tie the game 2-2 halfway through the period via a goal from Axel Lofgren to set up an overtime finish. It looked like the game was heading to a shootout after an over four-minute stalemate, but the Warriors were able to net the winning goal with twenty-one seconds to go, winning 3-2.
Wednesday’s overtime loss puts Cranbrook’s record at 12-10-1, the Bucks outshot West Kelowna 38-27. On special teams, Cranbrook went 2/5 on the power play and 2/3 on the penalty kill.
The Bucks continue their road trip Friday night in Salmon Arm versus the Silverbacks.
