A late push from the Cranbrook Bucks fell short Friday night enroute to a 3-2 loss versus the Sherwood Park Crusaders.
The first period was one for the defense. Both teams combined for just three shots on goal by the halfway mark, and neither club was able to find the net the rest of the way. The game remained at a scoreless tie at intermission.
The Crusaders broke the scoring in the second period. Goals from Chris Battaini and Tristen Buckley lifted the Alberta team to a 2-0 lead, while the Bucks continued to struggle with finding a way through Crusaders goalie James Venne. Sherwood Park led 2-0 after forty minutes.
An early third period goal for the Crusaders made it a 3-0 lead, and appeared to put the game out of reach for the Bucks. However, Cranbrook’s captain wasn’t ready to tap out just yet. Back to back Bryce Sookro power play goals suddenly had cut Cranbrook’s deficit to one. The Bucks continued to push, but would run out of time and settle for a 3-2 defeat.
Friday’s loss drops Cranbrook’s record to 9-4-0, they outshot Sherwood Park 35-31. On special teams, the Bucks finished 2/3 on the power play and 1/2 on the penalty kill.
The Bucks will seek redemption Saturday night when they host the Spruce Grove Saints.
