The Cranbrook Bucks ran into a speed bump Saturday night after going on cruise control through the first three games of the season, by way of an 8-5 setback versus the Okotoks Oilers.
It appeared the Bucks were on their way to victory after building a convincing lead in the first period. Goals from Jordan Murray, Maddex Marmulak and Jacob Fletcher to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Bucks began to run into penalty troubles in the second period, and Okotoks reaped the benefits. The home team responded with tallies from Jacob Goudreau, Coy Pighin and Jamie Hikida to erase Cranbrook’s lead and take a 3-3 into the forty minute barrier.
Both teams opened with early third period goals to bring the game to a 4-4 tie, but the Oilers managed to take control as time went on. Okotoks piled up four more goals in the final frame while the Bucks only managed to add one, and the game ended in an 8-5 victory for the Oilers.
Saturday’s loss drops Cranbrook’s record to 3-1. On special teams, Cranbrook’s power play went 1/5 while the penalty kill finished a busy night at 8/10. Okotoks outshot the Bucks 38-28.
The Bucks return to action Friday night at home versus the Blackfalds Bulldogs.
