Game Recap: Bucks Conclude Preseason with Shutout Win

The boys are back in town!

The Cranbrook Bucks returned home Saturday night for their final preseason game of the 2022-23 BCHL schedule, closing a home-and-home with the Trail Smoke Eaters with a lopsided 5-0 win.

The first period between the two clubs was a polar opposite version of what we saw in the opening frame in Trail on Friday. Both teams traded power play chances, but the goalies were strong. The first period ended just as it started, deadlocked at 0-0.

The scoreless tie was a distant memory by the end of the second period, thanks to an offensive outburst from the Cranbrook Bucks. The offence started on a power play point blast from Bucks captain Rhys Bentham at 5:23. Following Bentham’s goal, the Bucks got tallies from Carter Schmidt, Kellan Hjartarson, Noah Quinn and Ethan Sundar. That display of offense from the Bucks put them in the driver sea, holding a 5-0 lead ahead of the third period.

The Bucks cooled their jets for the third period. Neither team was able to add to the scoreboard. Cranbrook was able to cruise to a convincing 5-0 victory to close their preseason schedule.

Cranbrook was able to win the shots battle at 35-24. On special teams, the Bucks finished 1/7 on the power play, Trail went 0/3 with the man-advantage. The Bucks finish preseason action with a 3-0-1 record, regular season begins Friday in Merritt versus the Centennials.

Buck Tracks:

  • Nathan Airey stops 24 shots for the preseason shutout.
  • Noah Quinn finishes preseason with 4 goals.
  • 3 goals in 2 games for Ethan Sundar.
